The Capri has, in its various forms, provided performance motoring at low cost, but in 3.0-litre form has been a persistently excellent basis for a race-winning track car. It was nevertheless all too clear that if the big-engined Capri was to stay in production it needed updating, if only to improve levels of refinement and meet future exhaust emission standards.
