For Sharp handling, improved comfort
Against Lacks Saxo's drama, looks
Citroën’s frumpy Visa wasn’t the most likely basis for a hot hatch, but the feisty GTi of 1986 won many admirers as an alternative to the 205 GTi, with which it shared many components.
1987’s diminutive AX GT only had 85bhp, but its flyweight build made up for any lack of power. And the Saxo won the hearts of the Max Power generation in the ‘90s — despite losing out to the closely related Peugeot 106 GTi in road tests — thanks to free insurance deals, keen pricing and wide availability. The C2 VTR had a luke-warm reception, so the VTS has to reclaim the market for Citroën.
