BMW M3 E30 review

BMW M3 2.3

Test date 15 April 1987  Price as tested £23,128

Having decided in 1981 to end production of the mid-engined, two-seater, M1 coupé, BMW initiated development for a Group A production-racing successor. It was decided to base the new sports car on the 3-Series (introduced in 1982). Five years of intensive development later, we have the result in the shape of the M3 – albeit in left-hand-drive form only. The launch of the BMW M3 is an historic moment for the Bavarian manufacturer, as this is the first BMW to be developed by its Motorsport division and produced by BMW AG.
