BMW pretty much invented the appealing but unlikely idea of serving supercar pace in an executive saloon and, when it emerged in 1984, the first M5 delivered not only fine performance but excellent handling, too. Though it has been a minority interest model, the format prompted Mercedes to leap in, first with the 500E and then with its AMG E55s, Jaguar with the XJR and Audi with its RS6. More recently, Maserati used the excellent, previous-generation M5 as its benchmark for the Quattroporte, though this elegant saloon has already been eclipsed by the latest M5 in our recent group test (21 Sept), a comparison that also saw the Benz E55 defeated. Now we’re bringing you the full Autocar UK road test treatment of this extraordinarily impressive car, six months before it goes on sale. And as you’ll see, it sets a new benchmark.
