BMW M5 review

BMW 5 Series M5

Test date 20 January 1999  Price as tested £59,995

This car was never meant to exist. Three years ago, when it launched the new 5-series, BMW said there was no need for another M5 because the V8 540i was rapid enough.

But not only has the 540i failed to replace the old M5, but Mercedes and Jaguar have also stepped into its hole with super saloons of their own. Its predecessor was a tool for the hard-core enthusiast, but with a 400bhp V8 and the superb 5-series as a starting point, the new M5 could be even better.
