Price as tested £33,545
For Remarkable engine and gearbox, build quality
Against Subjective styling, run flat tyres, expensive options
Codenamed E12 in 1972, the first 5-series began life as a 520 four-cylinder and peaked as a 528i.
E28 was the second designation model in 1982, and it was the first real sales success, establishing the driver-oriented theme that was to continue for the next two decades.
Then followed the 1988 E34, a car that was simply too complete for the competition, and the 1996 E39. Time may judge that particular masterpiece as the best car the company ever made. But that depends how well this, the E60, does.
