The small, agile BMW saloon began in the ’60s with the 02 series, but the first real Three was the E21 of 1975. This spawned the legendary 143bhp 323i of 1977. It was replaced in 1983 by the E30. That car was a huge success, and by the time the E36 appeared in 1990, it was being widely imitated and the entire class of competing cars had been named after it. But it wasn’t until the E46 of 1998 that the Three became a sales phenomenon: 3,141,330 have been sold to date and they’re still counting.
