1968 was a successful year for Auto Union: production increased and its parent company, Volkswagen, invested £13 million in the expansion of the Ingolstadt plant. When the factory closes for the summer holiday, Beetle assembly will return to Wolfsburg; Auto Union will then concentrate on building more than 300 new 100 series every day. Although the Super 90 and Variant estate car will be available on special order, the importers will concentrate on Auto Union’s top model, the LS (Luxury Special) version of the 100 – the first completely new car since the firm’s take-over by VW from Mercedes-Benz.
