The DB nomenclature was created when David Brown bought Aston Martin in 1947. There was no DB1, and the DB2 went into production in 1950, with the DB2/4 (a 2+2 and therefore the spiritual predecessor to the DB9) arriving in 1953.
Next was the 1958 DB4, which spawned arguably the most evocative Aston of all: the DB4 GT, and the stunning Zagato-bodied version. Then things went downhill: DBS, DBS V8, Lagonda and Virage brought a reputation for surfeit weight and plutocratic excess. The 1996 DB7 was the turning point under Ford’s stewardship, and in 2001 the Vanquish previewed the future.
