Road Test

Vauxhall Carlton Lotus 4dr

Test date 28 November 1990  Price as tested £48,000

These are the main ingredients: a 3.6-litre, 24-valve straight-six with two charge-cooled turbos, twin catalysts and advanced engine management and injection for 377bhp and 419lb ft of torque.

There is a six-speed transmission lifted from the Corvette ZR-1; re-worked suspension with self-levelling dampers; massive 17in Ronal alloy rims with 235/45, 265/40 section tyres front/rear; huge ventilated discs all round, 13in diameter at the front with AP four-pot calipers derived from Group C racing, backed up with Bosch anti-lock.

There's also a body kit that maintains the Carlton 24v’s 0.31Cd, achieves zero lift front and rear and aids cooling to the engine and brakes.
