The 1910cc four-cylinder diesel engine was developed by the Fiat Group and has already impressed in cars such as the Alfa GT JTD and the Vauxhall Vectra CDTi 16v. It’s a high-pressure common-rail injection engine, and in the Saab it produces 150bhp at 4000rpm and 232lb ft of torque at 2000rpm, figures that put it near the top of the class for power, though near the bottom for torque. For example, the new BMW 320d and Honda Accord i-CTDi both produce around 250lb ft. There is also a new lower power variant of the same 9-3 engine with 120bhp and 206lb ft, and both engines drive through a six-speed gearbox
