Road Test

Renault 4 L

Test date 30 March 1962  Price as tested £645

The 4L exists as a basic, functional means of transport with purchase price and maintenance costs very much to the fore. To this end, much effort has been made to reduce servicing requirements to oil changes and occasional filter and plug changes. The cooling system should not require filling in the life of the vehicle. The chassis and body are one unit, with a front-mounted engine and front-wheel-drive. Sparse provision for luxuries helps keep the kerb weight to a useful 597kg – important, as the 747cc engine musters only a gentle 26.5bhp at 4600rpm and 40.5lb ft of torque at 2000rpm.Suspension is by wishbone and torsion bar at the front and trailing arms and torsion bars at the rear.
