Mercedes-Benz SL500 review - design

Mercedes-Benz SL 500

Test date 21 November 2001  Price as tested £68,500

At 400kg more than a Porsche 996 the automatic-only SL looks more tourer than sportster. As does the engine spec, but just three valves per cylinder and a 6000rpm red-line are all that’s needed for the 4996cc V8 to produce 310bhp and 339lb ft of torque. In fact, this is a thoroughly modern drivetrain with a five-speed adaptive auto and emissions below those required by Euro4.

The SL’s Active Body Control suspension system mixes a conventional spring and damper at each corner with a hydraulically controlled servo cylinder for the best ride and handling compromise.
