The Bora breaks tradition with previous road-going Maseratis by having its engine mounted centrally behind the driver. The 4.7-litre four-cam V8 produces 310bhp at 6000rpm and 340lb ft of torque and drives the rear wheels through a five-speed ZF gearbox.
Everything except the radiator and the spare wheel is contained within the 8ft 6in wheelbase so overall length is kept small and there should be little change in handling characteristics when the fuel tank and luggage space are filled.
Suspension is by conventional steel springs and wishbones front and rear, but Maserati uses Citroën pressurised hydraulics for the braking circuits, the pedal having virtually no movement.
