MGB review - design

MG B 1.8

Test date 12 February 1965  Price as tested £847

Over the most used rev range – 1500rpm to 4500rpm – the improved crankshaft support is apparent to anyone who remembers the earlier model, and even when revving the engine in neutral before driving off, one notices that what little harshness there was has now disappeared.

The smooth, strong torque at low revs is more like that of a six-cylinder unit than a four. Nevertheless, in its new form the engine is less free-revving, noisier when taken up to peak revs, and has a noticeable vibration period at 5000rpm.
