Lamborghini Countach review - design

Lamborghini Countach LP 500 S

Test date 09 October 1980  Price as tested £49,855

The 375bhp 4754cc, all-aluminium V12 has wet cylinder liners, a seven-bearing crank-shaft, chain-driven twin overhead shafts, six downdraught twin-choke Weber carburettors, twin Bendix electric fuel pumps, two electric fans and an oil cooler. It sits conventionally (for a mid-engined car) longways.

The body structure is an elaborate multi-tubular spaceframe with no tube larger than 1.25 inches in diameter. The body is aluminium alloy, apart from the steel roof and the glass-fibre cabin floor.

Then there is the size. With a wheelbase (96.5in) that is no bigger than an Alfasud’s and an overall length of only 13ft 7in the car is no less than 6ft 6 3/4in wide – about the same as a Rolls-Royce Phantom VI limousine.
