Alfa Romeo Alfasud review - design

Alfa Romeo Alfasud 1.2

Test date 20 September 1973  Price as tested £1,471

Power comes from a very modern flat-four engine with a single overhead camshaft for each cylinder bank, driven by silent cogged belts. Unlike the flat-four engines fitted to the Volkswagen and Citroën GS, the Alfa unit is water-cooled with an electric cooling fan behind the radiator.

With oversquare cylinders of 80mm x 59mm, the engine is high-revving, but long lasting as piston speeds are modest and the unit ultra-smooth. It is also a very low engine, which keeps the centre of gravity as near to the ground as possible and enables a low bonnet line at the front. MacPherson strut front suspension has little offset and a small degree of castor. A dead axle beam is employed at the rear.
