I've just sold an E36 M3 and cannot think what to replace it with I was thinking about an E46 M3 but can you recommend any better performance cars on a budget.

The age old problem of the M3 alternative. The wretched things are so good. I've just driven a wonderful V8 M5 (you'll read about it on Wednesday. You could buck the trend and upsize to one of these. My favourite M car of all time is the M coupe. On a more sensible note, the best M 3-series of all time is in my opinion the E46 M3 CS. Even better than the CSL.
